My 50 year journey in search of a whole person, whole world health and healing that culminated in a PhD in transpersonal psychology, convinced me that the practice of medicine and psychology belong together. The separation of disciplines where doctors treat the body and psychologists treat the mind, coincided with the ideological separation of body and mind. Doctors generally know very little about the psyche and psychologists know little about the body. Yet we all know that body and mind-psyche are inextricably interconnected and interdependent. I have found that psycho-social issues are the major factors in the pre-disposition, development and progression of chronic illnesses and cannot be fully cured unless these factors are taken into account. This requires the active participation of patients together with their health practitioners (doctors or psychologists) in understanding the root causes of their illnesses and finding ways to transform the fixed habitual psycho-social patterns.
